Duomo - The Cathedral

Nel 1621 il "Concilio dei 40" decise di costruire una nuova chiesa a Monterotondo, simile alla vecchia e piccola chiesa costruita cinque secoli prima.

I Barberini accettarono la decisione del Concilio e così la chiesa fu costruita nel 1630.

Poiché avevano ampliato le mura di protezione della città, non avevano abbastanza denaro per decorare la facciata frontale della chiesa, e questa è la ragione per cui essa ha una semplice facciata, in stile barocco.

Nel 1641 papa Urbano VIII visitò il duomo e donò qualche paramento sacro e una grande campana. Nel 1845 il nuovo papa Gregorio XVI elevò la chiesa a Basilica Minore.

All'interno della chiesa sulla volta si trova un grande quadro della Madonna attribuito a Domenico Pistrini. Inoltre, vi è una bellissima statua di legno della Madonna con il Bambino. L'altare è un antico sarcofago attribuito al II secolo. Sopra i tre ingressi principali c'è l'organo della chiesa.

The Cathedral

In 1621 the "Council of 40" decided to build a new church in Monterotondo, similar to the old and little church built five centuries before.

The Barberini accepted the decision of the Council and so the church was built in 1630.

Since they had developed the walls of the town, they didn't have enough money to decorate the front of the church, and this is the reason why it has a simple front, in baroque style.

In 1641 pope Urbano VIII visited the dome and gave a few holy clothes and a big bell.

In 1845 the new pope Gregorio XVI named the church "Minor Basilica".

Inside the church on the vault there is a big picture of the Virgin, attributed to Domenico Pistrini. Besides, there is a beautiful wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with Her Child. The altar is an ancient sarcophagus dating back to the II century. On the main three entries there is the organ of the church.
